AP Lit/Comp
Instructor: Ms. Hayden

Course Description: In AP English 12, students will work with specific pieces of literature to analyze authors’ uses of literary devises and rhetoric to structure and shape meaning. Students will refine their critical thinking skills, and learn to develop well written literary critiques. As they study each piece of literature, they will become acquainted with the historical, political, economic, and cultural forces which influenced the writings.

Course Expectation: The expectation of this Honors Course is that students will read widely in order to advance critical thinking through literary analysis, to do well on any of the external tests for Advanced Placement, and to prepare for college level courses.  The intention of this course is to provide students with the opportunity to become well read, and to polish critical thinking and writing skills. If students plan well and use time wisely, they will do well in class, on their external exams and they will be prepared for college if that is their goal.

In addition to the readings assigned for class study, students should choose from a list of books provided and do a close reading and literary analysis. There are three books chosen from the AP Reading list due over the course of this year. With prior approval, students may substitute plays for novels. Due Dates are negotiable based on student needs and schedules. Tentatively, book reviews are due at the end of first, second and third quarter.

Class Format: The class format includes lectures, modeled and guided instruction, collaborative analysis of literature, independent analysis, frequent class discussions, writing assessments completed in and out of class, as well as the preparation of critical essays and the completion of research papers.  All students will maintain a portfolio of work. Note: A monthly instructional calendar will be published and revised as necessary in order to keep students and parents updated on assignment and testing information.
